STANLY COUNTY, N.C. — Deputies are investigating after two people were killed and one person was seriously injured Monday morning in a shooting at a Stanly County home.

The Stanly County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene on Shady Rest Road in New London around 9 a.m.

Deputies said they found a man and woman dead inside the home and another man outside the home suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Authorities arrested Meeko Harris, 33, who they said could be the gunman. He was found in Anson County.

Hilda Capel was on her way to pick up her granddaughter Monday morning to take her to court.

She knew something was wrong when she got to her daughter’s home.

“And then I pulled up, and all this was going on. I had no idea,” Capel said. “But when I saw that door open and all (the) police cars, I said, ‘Oh my God.’”

Neighbors told Channel 9's Mark Becker that this was not a random shooting and the people inside the home were involved in drug activity.

Nathan Harris lives next door and told Channel 9 that he heard somebody knocking on his neighbor's door. Harris said the knocking was so loud it made him get out of bed and the man, who was bleeding, at the door asked him to call 911. The man said he played dead to survive.

“I tried to do my best to help him first, then I called 911,” Harris said.

Deputies said the Harris just got out of prison on a second-degree murder charge.
