YORK, S.C. — A man was arrested and deputies seized dozens of animals Monday morning in York County, including dogs and monkeys.

After several months of investigation poor living conditions and concerns of the health of the animals at a house off West Liberty Hill Road, deputies arrested David Andrew Barber, 63, and seized the animals.

Chopper 9 Skyzoom flew over the police activity around noon along the property in York.

The sheriff’s office said Animal Control safely took control of 80 small breed dogs, two monkeys and one bird.

The animal shelter had to shut down to help take care of all the animals.

Barber was arrested on multiple counts of ill treatment of animals and hoarding of animals. Other charges may be pending after a veterinarian examines the animals.

Deputies also discovered methamphetamine and seized several guns during the search.

“We are thankful for the teamwork between our deputies and animal control to make sure these animals get the care they need, and hopefully in the future a loving home,” said Sheriff Kevin Tolson.

The only time when law enforcement can legally remove an animal is when there are “exigent circumstances” or by a court order or search warrant.

“Exigent circumstances would be imminent danger of death or destruction of evidence,” the sheriff’s office stated.

The animals will be examined by a veterinarian for health conditions before being allowed to be adopted. Officials said there was no evidence of dog fighting or baiting.

The investigation is ongoing.
