Authorities said they responded after 2:45 a.m. to 30th Street Northeast for an active breaking and entering call.
When they arrived, deputies told Channel 9′s Dave Faherty they saw signs that a person forced their way into the home. Deputies found two people inside who had been shot.
Amy Raelynne Phillips, 46, died and a 22-year-old was flown to a hospital in Charlotte for treatment. Investigators said she is still in critical condition.
Shykwon Gibbs was taken into custody at the home and is charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and burglary, according to the sheriff’s office.
For hours Sunday morning, deputies and State Bureau of Investigation agents collected evidence around the home.

In 911 calls obtained by Channel 9, you can hear Phillips asking for help after saying her daughter’s boyfriend broke into the home and that he had a gun.
“I need the police to come out here there’s someone banging on my door,” she said. “He’s got a gun. It’s my daughter’s boyfriend.”
The dispatcher asked what the suspect’s name is, and Phillips replied, “He’s busting the door in.”
Deputies said when they arrived at the home, Phillips was already dead.
According to court documents, Gibbs was previously accused of punching his girlfriend in the face and was ordered by a judge to stay away from her.
On Monday morning, Faherty saw flowers left by loved ones outside the home. Neighbors told Channel 9 they’d seen previous fights at the home.
Neighbor Ernest Dagenhart said the news of the shooting was hard to believe.
“He threatened to shoot her, then she got over here and called the law,” Dagenhart said. “He took off running and the law caught up with him.”
“He was kind of shoving her and talking kind of rough to her,” neighbor Betty Petersen said.
The domestic violence charges filed two years ago were later dismissed because Phillips’ daughter did not show up to court, according to Catawba County court officials.
