CHARLOTTE, N.C. — This year, we have seen many young adults march and demonstrate for causes that are close to their hearts.

The movement continues Sunday in Charlotte and one thing many will be carrying with them is the memory of a man who has been gone for nearly seven years.

Jonathan Ferrell was shot and killed by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer Randall Kerrick in 2013.

He was unarmed.

Kerrick’s case ended in a mistrial on manslaughter charges and was dropped from there.

Sunday, organizers with the Million Youth March invited people to march in memory of Ferrell. They were also calling for peace, love and justice for all.

The peaceful march was held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. Demonstrators met at the Bradfield Farms Reedy Creek Pool on Reedy Creek Road in east Charlotte.

“This is just another reminder to remind the community. Yes, it did happen right here in our backyard,” said Mario Black, founder of Million Youth March of Charlotte.

Channel 9′s Glenn Counts spoke to Jonathan’s mother, Georgia Ferrell, from Florida. She was not able to travel to Charlotte for the march because of the coronavirus outbreak in her state.

“The one thing that I would like to see changed is some of these people be convicted for what they have done. We never get any justice,” she said.

Jonathan’s older brother spoke to the marchers on his cellphone. They took a knee in front of the spot where he was shot and killed.

“If we don’t just keep standing up and keep telling them we are not going to have this anymore, it’s gonna continue to happen, so we can’t go quiet,” she said.
