DAVIDSON, N.C. — The plan for a controversial hotel in Davidson was approved Tuesday night, 4-1 by commissioners.
The lame-duck Davidson Board of Commissioners discussed whether to approve the controversial hotel.
At a crowded meeting on Tuesday night, many called for the board to leave the decision up to its successors.
One speaker expressed her displeasure about the hotel by singing a song when it was her turn to take the podium.
Residents are concerned about parking, traffic and the hotel’s proximity to an elementary school.
The Hyatt Place on Griffith Street is expected to have 115 rooms and stand four stories tall.
Another speaker quoted a pop culture star.
“’I'm drawing a line in the sand,’ Eminem says,” the speaker said. “’You're either for or against it.’”
The developer said Davidson is growing and a new hotel will benefit the entire Lake Norman community, including the college campus nearby.
“This is a college town and a college town deserves a special hotel that is situated in a location that is walkable to campus and Main Street,” the developer said.
That message isn't sitting well with most neighbors.
The next board can't overturn Tuesday's decision and if it does, it will risk legal action.
