DAVIDSON, N.C. — Town commissioners in Davidson have unanimously approved the Summit Farms mixed-use project.

That 58-acre development will combine a working farm, commercial space and low-density housing in east Davidson.

Tuesday’s vote marks a significant step forward for the project, setting the stage for planning and execution, says Brian Helfrich, one of the developers.

“I think getting approved for this project is such a significant step forward for something that’s taken us two to three years to bring to fruition. And now everything becomes a lot more real, which is exciting,” he says. “We’re excited to have the opportunity to be the stewards of this land and develop it.”

The genesis for Summit Farms started when Helfrich — also CEO of Summit Coffee — was looking for headquarters space for the 25-year-old brand in Davidson. He found a parcel, and an opportunity surfaced to purchase surrounding lots and create a village around an existing organic farm.

19300 Shearer Road Realty — an entity affiliated with Summit Farms — assembled five adjacent parcels at East Rocky River and Shearer roads for roughly $4.1 million.
