Daughter of slain Uber driver denied visa to attend alleged killers' plea hearing

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Relatives of an Uber driver who was killed in Charlotte said the two men accused in the homicide may take plea deals soon.

The family members are still mourning Marlo Medina-Chevez and want one of his daughters, who lives in Honduras, to be at the hearing. Denia Medina's request for a visa, which would allow her to travel from Honduras to Charlotte, was recently denied.

“We kind of just live with just the pain of not having him here,” the victim’s other daughter, Genesis Medina, said.

James Stevens and Diontray Adams are scheduled to be in court late July and could decide to plead guilty.

Genesis Medina said she will be there with her mother, Elsa Medina.

Genesis Medina wants Denia Medina to be there too.

“She's suffering by herself,” Genesis Medina said. “It's just her and her son.

But the American Embassy denied her application for a visa.

“They just asked her a series of questions,” Genesis Medina said. “She answered them, and they said, ‘No.’”

Elsa Medina said her husband always told her that if something happened to him, Denia Medina is part of their family and they should be together.

George Miller, an immigration attorney in Charlotte, said getting Denia Medina to the hearing is a long shot.

“But if you go to the airport today, very likely no one is entering the United States with that type of permission,” Miller said.

Family members have not given up hope.

“We're trying everything we can, everything we can, to get her here,” Genesis Medina said.
