CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Interstate 77 has had a lot of media coverage over the last few years, and now a stretch in Lake Norman is making headlines as one of the top 100 worst bottlenecks for trucks in the country.
“We look for locations where trucks are not operating over an extended period of time at free-flowing speeds,” said Rebecca Brewster, president of the American Transportation Research Institute.
The institute gathered data from over 250 locations.
Multiple wrecks were reported along the interstate heading into the Lake Norman area.
“It's just an attractive place for people to relocate, retire, work and we know more people are moving here,” North Carolina Department of Transportation spokeswoman Jen Thompson said.
Another stretch of I-77 that made the list is the Interstate 485 flyover, which came in at No. 85 on the list.
“You have two big interstates coming together,” Thompson said. “Of course I-77 going north, south out of our state, and I-485 that circles around Charlotte.”
The goal of gathering this data is to cut down on billions of lost money every year for truckers, drivers and companies.
