Dan DiMicco backs addition of women’s pro team to Charlotte Independence roster

CHARLOTTE — Add women’s professional soccer to Charlotte’s sports roster. On Tuesday, the United Soccer League, or USL, disclosed eight cities — including Charlotte — that will have teams in the new USL Super League.

The league’s first season will begin in August 2024 and end in June 2025. Charlotte’s USL Super League team will play home matches at American Legion Memorial Stadium, home to the men’s USL League One Charlotte Independence.

The USL Super League team and the Independence are siblings: Retired Nucor Corp. CEO Dan DiMicco is the principal owner of both teams. Jim McPhilliamy is a minority investor and managing partner of both teams.

“We’re excited about the Super League team — it’s great for women’s sports in Charlotte,” DiMicco told CBJ.

DiMicco and McPhilliamy, in separate interviews, said they want to bring on other investors. McPhilliamy told CBJ he hopes to find local businesswomen interested in being part of the ownership group.
