KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — Supporters of Ted Cruz packed a church in Kannapolis one week before the North Carolina primary to see their candidate speak.

It was the Senator's second stop in North Carolina after time forced him to cancel a rally in Raleigh.

Cruz said with every state his campaign is closing the gap on Donald Trump, calling the front-runner a liberal who has been funding Washington for decades and if nominated, will lose to Hillary Clinton.

Cruz's message centered on jobs, religious freedom and security.

"I will fight with every breath in my body to stop Obamacare, to stop amnesty, stop the debt, to defend our religious liberty, to defend the Second Amendment, to defend the Bill of Rights, to bring back jobs."

The crowd was often loudest when Cruz spoke of getting back to the principles that built America.

"He means every word that he says and he's willing to do whatever it takes to get it done," said supporter Dan Monahan.

"He's a Christian and he's for the people and not for himself," supporter Betty Barberree told Channel 9.

Cruz addressed a sea or reporters following the rally, saying he's encouraged to see the Republican Party unite behind him.

"What we're seeing now is Republicans coming together unifying and recognizing that our campaign is the only campaign that has repeatedly beaten Donald Trump over and over again."
