UNION COUNTY, N.C. — Authorities identified the victim in Friday's deadly Union County plane crash as Robert William Schroll, 59, of Pageland, South Carolina.
Crews responded to the crash near 4000 Poplin Road between Indian Trail and Monroe, officials said.
The call for the crash involving the ultralight aircraft came in at 4:08 p.m.
A witness told reporter Jenna Deery that he saw the plane flying low and knew it was going to crash. He said it was very loud.
“I ran over through the woods and I couldn't get to the guy because there's a chain link fence that runs around the property,” the witness said. “It's eight feet tall with barbwire on top of it and no way could I get over there.”
Aubrey Haigler owns a trucking company near where the ultralight aircraft went down this afternoon.
“I believed it was dust but when I looked out the window, it seemed to increase,” Haigler said.
The aircraft went down just off Poplin Road near the same spot where a 58-year-old Robert Schroll crashed an ultralight plane in November. He survived but had a severe concussion.
Monroe police could not confirm if it was the same Robert Schroll killed in Friday’s crash.
The FAA is investigating the crash.
