CHARLOTTE — A credit card skimming device was found attached to a pump at a Gas Station on Charlotte's Remount Road.
A local BP gas distributor who services the gas station told Channel 9 over the phone this is the second skimmer found at the same gas station in two weeks.
Skimmers have been found at ATMs and gas pumps across the region in recent weeks:
- Credit card skimmers found on Hickory gas pumps
- Maiden police looking for card skimmer suspect
- 3 card skimmers discovered at south Charlotte gas station
- 'Sophisticated' card skimmer found on Hickory ATM
- Police warn of credit card skimmers in Gastonia
- Police warn residents after skimmer found in Matthews, Indian Trail
The distributor says a worker found the device Wednesday afternoon after servicing the dispenser. He says that dispenser had a lock on it. In theory, no one should be able to access it except for employees. However, someone somehow did.
"That freaks me out a little bit. I don't really buy gas here that often," Jeff Greco, a shopper said.
"I just hope they keep better track of that kind of thing and hope it doesn't happen again," Darren Smith said.
The gas distributor Channel 9 spoke with says some gas stations are already taking proactive measures.
Installing anti-skimming equipment on eight dispensers could cost anywhere from $90,000 to $100,000.
If a skimmer is located, please inform your local law enforcement agency so that the device can be removed and analyzed appropriately.
