CMPD said a preliminary investigation indicates that Mercury, driven by 24-year-old Daizah Breon Gibson, was traveling northbound on Pence Road when she crossed the center line and struck the Honda head-on.
The driver of the Honda, 74-year-old Anne Stewart Bryan, died at Atrium Main from injuries sustained in the collision.
Gibson was also taken to Atrium Main for treatment of serious injuries. While being evaluated, hospital staff contacted police under suspicion that she was impaired.
Police determined that Gibson’s impairment was the proximate cause of the crash. She has been charged with death by motor vehicle, reckless driving, and driving left-of-center.
