Fatal crash closes part of I-77 Northbound near Mooresville, NCDOT says

MOORESVILLE, N.C. — A fatal crash shut down I-77 Northbound on Saturday afternoon, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Troopers say the crash happened at 4:20 p.m. on I-77 North near Mooresville.

A 2020 Nissan Sentra was heading north in the I-77 emergency lane, didn’t slow down, and hit a 2014 Freightliner tractor-trailer that was stopped at the emergency line.

Allante Nathaniel Watts, 28, from Gastonia, was driving the Nissan and died from his injuries at the scene.

NCSHP says the tractor-trailer driver was not hurt.

Troopers say I-77 was closed for three hours while they investigated the crash.

No charges will be filed in this case.
