CHARLOTTE — Pounds of drugs were discovered at Charlotte Douglas Airport before the holidays, according to newly unsealed court documents.
Channel 9′s Hunter Sáenz delved into this incident.
Previously, drugs, money, and other illegal items being smuggled through suitcases have been intercepted on arrival by law enforcement.
This time, authorities said dozens of pounds of drugs were being sent through shipping companies.
Between November 29 and December 19, police said they seized nearly 70 pounds of controlled substances. The exact type of drugs, however, is unknown.
According to warrants, investigators were called to nearby warehouses where eight boxes were shipped via plane.
A K-9 officer named Cali, with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, then made hits after sniffing the boxes in multiple lineups.
Cali sniffs bags arriving from cities known as narcotic-source locations, such as Los Angeles and Las Vegas, when they arrive at the airport.
Cali, her handler, and homeland security agents work in partnership to catch drugs being smuggled through the airport. They often delve into secret hiding places criminals try to stash drugs into.
In this case, the controlled substances were shipping, so they likely did not physically travel through the terminals.
However, it will not start a web for investigators as they try to pinpoint larger drug smuggling operations.
