GASTONIA, N.C. — Weddings are supposed to be memorable, and thanks to the generosity of a Gastonia nursing home, one bride will never forget her special day.
When Brittany Grigg was seven years old, her grandparents were in a car accident that claimed the life of her grandmother and left her grandfather, Lee Roy, in a wheelchair.
From that point on, Grigg did everything she could for her grandfather.
“I said, ‘Paw Paw, I’m going to be your nurse. If you need anything, I’ll be here for you,’” she remembered.

The two formed a special bond over the years, and when Grigg got engaged, she worried that Lee Roy, who is now 95 and lives in a nursing home, wouldn’t be able to attend her dream wedding.
Then, the COVID-19 pandemic happened, which complicated things even more.
Initially, Grigg and her fiancé Josh Feldman planned to have a wedding in the mountains. They’d visit Lee Roy afterward and repeat their vows in front of his window.
But the staff at Courtland Terrace invited the couple to get married in the facility’s courtyard so Lee Roy could be there.
"It was a no brainer," Feldman said.
“We didn’t want him to miss out on this,” Grigg added.
When Grigg told her grandfather about their plans, he got emotional.
“He just cried and said, ‘I’m the happiest man in the whole world,’” she said.
Earlier this month, the couple were married at sunset as Lee Roy looked on.
“It was so much more special than I could ever imagine,” Grigg said.
