CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Mecklenburg County officials want to prevent the mosquito-borne Zika virus in Charlotte, and leaders held a demonstration Wednesday morning.
Recent rain could lead to more mosquitoes rapidly multiplying, especially if yards have standing water, which can be a huge breeding ground for the bugs.
"Everyone's concerned with Zika, and we want everyone to be taking care of their own yards and be proactive this season," said environmental health supervisor Tim Dutcher.
Last year, the Carolinas had 155 travel cases of the Zika virus.
There have been seven travel cases of the Zika virus across the Carolinas this year.
