CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Channel 9 obtained new documents breaking down the campaign finances of each of Charlotte's mayoral candidates.
Charlotte's mayoral election is still nine months away, but money is already pouring into the bank accounts of candidates and a newcomer is leading the way.
Republican city councilman Kenny Smith has the most cash right now, according to campaign finance reports.
He has more than $65,000, but most of it was raised in 2015.
Mayor Jennifer Roberts is continuing to build her war chest with about $42,000 on hand, including a personal loan of $10,000 to the campaign.
Roberts had several high-profile donors in 2016, including philanthropist Philip Blumenthal, CEO Thomas Belk Jr. and attorney Bill Diehl.
Roberts has a large lead over her potential Democratic opponents.
Mayor pro tem Vi Lyles' report isn't available, but records show she transferred $15,000 to an account called"Vi Lyles for Mayor."
State Sen. Joel Ford has $5,500.
Candidates running for mayor must file by July.
