CORNELIUS, N.C. — An accident involving a contractor caused wastewater to spill into Lake Norman, according to Charlotte Water.
Crews said they responded to a wastewater overflow near the 18000 block of Torrence Chapel Estates Circle.
An estimated 460 gallons reached Lake Norman near Knox Cove before crews were able to stop the spill.
“A majority of wastewater overflows can be prevented with your help,” Spokesperson at Charlotte Water Cam Coley said. “Anything put in plumbing or a manhole can cause wastewater overflows, spilling raw sewage into your street, your creek or even inside your own home. Even products labeled as ‘flushable’ do not breakdown in the sewer system and can contribute to clogging.”
A no-swimming advisory was issued for the area at the time and was lifted on Thursday.
According to Charlotte Water, there are several ways people can help prevent wastewater overflows.
How You Can Help:
- Toss in the trash: paper towels, wipes, hair, cotton swabs, feminine products, dental floss, coffee grounds, and excess food.
- Toss in the toilet: only toilet paper.
- Drain in the sink: soap suds, small amounts of food from plates, and liquids.
- Take to a full-service recycling center: used and expired oils and grease.
