Competitors must face ‘The Green Mile' at Quail Hollow

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Green Mile is the name given to the challenging final three holes at Quail Hollow where the PGA Championship is being held.

The biggest obstacles players will face this week will be from the time they tee off at 16 until they sink the putt at 18.

"There's no doubt the championship is going to happen at the Green Mile,” said Tom DeLozier, Quail Hollow general manager. “Whether you're in the lead, (it) really doesn't mean much coming into 16."

The 16th hole is a par 4 and is 506 yards. The 17th hole is a par 3 at 223 yards and the 18th hole is a 494 yard, par 4.

The total -- just 537 yards short of an actual mile.

"I think 17 is the toughest of the closing stretch,” two-time PGA Champion Rory McIlroy said. “You're raised up and you've got that skinny green, and you've got the water on your left."

He said he's had good runs and bad runs on the Green Mile and there is one aspect on which everyone agrees.

"It'll be an exciting finish to the tournament," McIlroy said.
