YORK COUNTY, S.C. — A longtime member of the York County Sheriff’s Office died unexpectedly over the weekend at his daughter's wedding, the sheriff said.

Detective Tim Buchanan, 54, suffered a heart attack.

He passed away at his daughter’s wedding in Costa Rica, according to his family.

“During the wedding, after the father-daughter dance, Tim had a heart attack,” the post reads. “Sadly, he didn’t survive it. Our hearts are broken for (his wife) Jeni and their entire family.”

The sheriff thanked everyone for their prayers for Buchanan's family and all those who worked with him at the sheriff's office.

“We are going to miss him his talent, his work,” Lt. Carson Neely with the Sheriff’s Office said. “I'm going to miss my friend.”

According to his obituary, Buchanan “was a hard worker that loved his family, country, and community. He thrived on challenges and was always working to make things the best that he could. He served in the Army National Guard for 12 years. He also worked for the York County Sheriff's office for almost 19 years, most recently as a detective in cyber crimes.”

A private service will be held for him on Sunday, Sept. 11.
