CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A community is mourning the loss of a teen who was killed while serving as a missionary in California.
Officials said Andrew Page, 18, of Charlotte, was serving in the California Arcadia Mission when he was struck and killed by a car while riding his bicycle.
"Every church member is saddened and grieves at the death of a missionary. We unite our prayers and love in behalf of Elder Page's family, friends and missionary companions," said The Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints in a statement Saturday,
The church said Page was looking forward to serving a mission since he was eight years old. He got his chance this year and had been serving the mission in California since August and had trained in Mexico City.
Eyewitness News was told he was friends with everyone he met.
He sent his family an email Wednesday, the day before he died, saying he felt love around him, and that he hoped they knew he loved all of them from the bottom of his heart.
His funeral will be at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints meetinghouse, 2500 Rocky River Rd, at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19.
