CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Mecklenburg County Commissioner Jim Puckett wants to revisit renovating Memorial Stadium after Charlotte City Council turned down the deed.
The economic committee declined the deed, which was gifted by the county because it included a contingency that the Memorial Stadium must be used for Major League Soccer.
Earlier this month, commissioners decided not to use taxpayer money on an MLS stadium.
Puckett said if the city does not want the stadium it could be renovated for the Charlotte Independence, which plays in the United Soccer League.
“MLS for Charlotte” said in a statement that they are confident there's a solution.
“To win an expansion club, we need a strong public-private partnership to demonstrate Charlotte's enthusiasm for the sport and league," they said.
