LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. — A collapsed culvert in Lincoln County is preventing people from leaving their neighborhood and it is impacting nearly a dozen families.

Lincoln County Emergency Management said the heavy rain and flooding across the region caused a culvert to collapse on Daybrook Court, which is part of the Cedarbrook subdivision in Catawba Springs Township.

The collapsed culvert, along with tough land in the area, has comprised the road and is now preventing access to 11 homes.

Authorities said the road is a privately owned road and is not maintained by the North Carolina Department of Transportation so the residents will have to find a way to pay for the repairs.

“It’s scary. I have kids who walk this road to go to the bus stop because the bus won’t come down this road because its a privately owned road,” said resident Tiffany Carpenter.

Several agencies including local emergency management, first responders and the Red Cross are working to help the residents in the neighborhood and are performing regular welfare checks as well as providing meals.

Channel 9′s DaShawn Brown spoke with several people in the neighborhood, who said they have been trapped since Thursday.

“I’ve been walking up the hill to go to the store,” resident Virginia Rivers said. “That’s all I can do. I’m always 70 years old. You try to climb that at 70 years old.”

Officials said the county is going to continue working with the state to find a solution and provide assistance to the residents in the neighborhood.
