Cold, wet weather delays roundabout construction in Mint Hill

MINT HILL, N.C. — Frustrated drivers in Mint Hill will have to wait even longer for a major construction project to finish.

The roundabout on Lawyers Road won’t open until this spring.

Traffic Team 9’s Mark Taylor went to the construction site near Bain School Road, where the rain is to blame for the delay.

“It’s getting busier and busier and busier and a lot of school traffic, too,” said concerned resident Luther Fincher.

Fincher is talking about Lawyers Road near Bain School Road, where crews have been working on a roundabout since June 2018 to help reduce the number of accidents at the intersection.

Cold, wet weather has delayed the opening from October 2018 to the spring of 2019.

Crews have been seen using blowers to dry the roadway.

NCDOT has told Channel 9 that there are seasonal limitations where it’s either too cold or too wet to pave, plus all this rain is not good for the project.

“It’s disappointing that they couldn’t take that time back during the summer when it was nice and pretty and didn’t get rain for weeks. They could have completed the entire project,” said Fincher.

Accidents have been issues in the past. Back in November, Channel 9 reported on a 16-year-old Rocky River High School athlete who was killed along the stretch of Lawyers Road, where the crews are building the new roundabout.

“Live with it and know it’s going to get better in the long run… sometime,” said Fincher.
