CHARLOTTE — A woman in her 60s was seriously hurt Thursday after a shooting in Charlotte’s South End neighborhood, officials said.

It happened before noon along Griffith Street near South Tryon Street.

Chopper 9 Skyzoom flew over the scene and could see crime scene tape roping off the parking lot at a housing complex. Sources told Channel 9 that Robbin Neely, who was shot, may have been caught in the crossfire and was likely not the intended target.

MEDIC said Robbin Neely was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

“I’m trying to figure out what’s going on, but I just can’t figure out what? What? How?” her brother, Michael Neely, told Channel 9.

The victim’s niece, Tiawana Brown, is a community activist who grew up in Southside Homes.

“At the end of the day, this is my community,” Brown said. “This is what I love.”

She said that her family roots run deep there.

“The crime that continues to hit our community and our city, and now it’s hit home,” she said. “It’s hit my family.”

After years of helping other families torn apart by violence, Brown said she has a new, personal mission.

“We need to take back our neighborhoods,” Brown said. “We have to have people that say they’re in the community to stand for the communities. And you have to turn people in when they do stuff like this. When they come into your neighborhood and do stuff like this, you have to make sure that they know it’s not OK.”

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools confirmed that Marie G. Davis, a K-8 school, was on lockdown because of police activity in the area. That lockdown was lifted around 2 p.m.

No arrests have been made in this case.
