CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools veteran and Park Road Montessori School principal Anna Moraglia has been suspended, and parents received messages this week confirming her status.
"In terms of her personal character, it does bring up some questions," parent Wisdom Jzar said.
The suspension comes after questions were raised about the handling of the school's finances.
In July, police launched an embezzlement investigation after $15,276 was reported stolen.
A police report said the funds were discovered missing after an audit. The case is under investigation, and no charges have been filed.
CMS officials refused to say whether Moraglia's suspension is related to the embezzlement investigation.
"The focus is on an effective opening of school for students and maintaining the exceptional quality of teaching and learning at Park Road," Yaviri Escalera, a spokesperson for CMS, said.
Park Road Montessori is one of the most popular magnet schools in the CMS system and Magnolia has been an employee with CMS since 1994.
She was suspended with pay and the interim principal is Martha Carpenter.
The school held an open house Thursday before the first day of classes on Monday. Many parents had the suspension on their mind and said they stand by the principal despite the suspension and investigation.
"I always liked her. I met her on a few occasions, like a lot of parents do," Dan Edes said. "She was always very caring, compassionate. We've always had really positive experiences here."
