CMS student assignment will not be decided until summer 2017

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — There will be another year of waiting for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ parents.

Parents have to wait until the summer of 2017 to know if the district will move their children into other schools.

For some, that delay is putting their life on hold.

"That's anxiety, not knowing. Do you want to move? Do you want to stay where you're at? I think it puts everybody in flux in waiting," Lydia Schoeck said.

The school board approved a timeline Tuesday night to wait on making the redistricting decision and any changes to school boundaries won't start until the fall of 2018.

The district wants to fix low achieving schools and make sure schools are diverse.

While the district takes its time, the town of Matthews is not.

Town leaders are discussing whether they should break off from the district.

"The rubber will really hit the road when they start actually putting lines on a map and really assigning or re-assigning students to various schools," Matthews Mayor Jim Taylor said.

There are five schools in Matthews that are part of CMS.

Taylor organized a task force to study options if the district decides to move their children, out of their community schools.

"We just want to know. I don't know what the ultimate answer is."

Taylor said the task force is planning to reach out to districts in North Carolina and one in particular in Nevada with similar demographics that broke away from another district for advice.
