CMS investigating after someone accessed remote classroom, played ‘inappropriate video’

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools are investigating after someone gained access to a remote classroom and played an inappropriate video.

It happened Tuesday morning while fifth-grade students at Greenway Park Elementary were logging on remotely.

According to a message to parents, Principal Andrea Runyon said an inappropriate video started playing while the students were signing on.

It is not clear what was played in the video.

Officials said school leaders and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Police are investigating, but it appears someone used a student’s name to gain access to the remote classroom via Zoom.

Runyon encouraged parents to speak with children about internet safety and to make sure students aren’t sharing login information.

School leaders said there are counselors available for any students who may need them.
