CHARLOTTE — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools has crowned its first flag football league champions.

Twenty teams from around the district came out to Bank of America Stadium Sunday for the inaugural season championship.

The Panthers and CMS Athletics announced the creation of the league back in February. Leaders hoped the program would pave the way for similar leagues across the Carolinas.

“To show a different sport in a different light, and it kind of brings other people that might not have had that opportunity to play this game,” said Mike Rucker, former Panthers player.

The girls team from Julius L. Chambers High School won Sunday’s championship game.
