CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Citizens on Patrol volunteer directing traffic Monday night was struck by a car on Park Road at Hillside Avenue, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.

Investigators said a white, four-door sedan drove off after striking volunteer William Schweppe, who was wearing a reflective vest and using a flashlight as a traffic wand.

Schweppe suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, officials said, and he is expected to have surgery Tuesday.

The original wreck involved a vehicle that struck a power pole and caused the busy road to be closed for several hours while the pole was repaired.

The driver in that wreck was not injured.

CMPD officials said they're still working to identify the driver involved in the hit-and-run.
