CHARLOTTE, N.C. — January has been a deadly month for the city of Charlotte as investigators handle eight murders. The latest murder happened Thursday night in the north side of town.
Andrew Dyles was beaten to death Thursday night. His body was found in the woods off Wadsworth
Place.
It happened near Hope Chapel, a place of hope for Nathan Jeter.
"It shocked me," Jeter said. "It don't feel good because some stuff could be avoided."
"My first reaction is pain," Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Capt. Cecil Brisbon said. "Because when I look at those numbers I don't see numbers, I see families. I see people that are affected, I see people that are impacted."
He said investigators cannot pinpoint a reason why their homicides have suddenly spiked, but he believes it will not continue to climb.
"We always have an ebb and flow in terms of what crime looks like, some subtle peaks and valleys," Bribson said.
They average about four homicides in the month of January, according to Bribson
In 2012 there were five in January, 52 for the year.
There were four homicides in January 2013 and there were 58 for the entire year.
There was one homicide in January 2014 and 42 for the year.
Brisbon said five of the eight homicides this year have been solved.
"Any number is unacceptable," Bribson said. "Any number is one too many."
He said officers are doing more work now on the community level to identify people who may become the source of deadly confrontations. They are re-evaluating what they are doing now to see if they can get ahead of the problem.
Police are looking for help solving three homicides – one from Thursday night, and the shooting deaths of a man on Wallace Road Jan. 20 and of someone shot to death on Fairfield Avenue Jan. 1.
