CHARLOTTE — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police is receiving two federal grants to process rape kits.
The grants totals $2.9 million and is coming from the Department of Justice. It will help CMPD hire staff and support the processing of rape kits, according to a release.
Congressman Jeff Jackson released a statement Monday about the grants.
“For every unprocessed rape kit there is a survivor of sexual assault who hasn’t gotten justice,” Jackson said. “I’m grateful that Charlotte will receive nearly $3 million in funding from the Department of Justice to process and review rape kits so that justice can be served and criminals are taken off the street.”
The bill is set to provide transparency into rape kit backlogs.
