CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is making changes to their use of force policy -- even changing what they call it -- but told Channel 9 the changes are not tied to any specific case.
Chief Kerr Putney said the department is updating its policy, which will now be called Response to Resistance, which underscores their "philosophical commitment to the preservation of human life and to only deploy control methods when it is reasonably necessary."

Putney said de-escalation is defined for the first time in the new policy and that it will be the goal in "every single case."
