CMPD pleas to community as shelter reaches 40 kennels over capacity

CHARLOTTE — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care and Control is making another plea to the community as their shelter fills to capacity.

Officials told Channel 9 that there at 211 dogs in their kennels and the facility has no more room.

The shelter said there are already 70 more dogs with foster families and they hope to boost that number so they can avoid tough decisions such as euthanasia.

“Looking at the numbers, and bottom line, Charlotte is a growing community. And the more people the more animals in our community. And they are coming in,” CMPD Communications and Outreach Manager Melissa Knicely said.

The shelter also said many people who lost their pets may not know to come to their center to look for them. They said it leads to a backlog, so they are hoping to get the word out.
