CHARLOTTE — A driver that was involved in a hit-and-run crash that sent two officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department to the hospital is expected in court Monday.
Aaron Sipf, 32, is no stranger to the law but his latest brush was a literal run-in with police, Channel 9′s Glenn Counts reports.
CMPD said that officers were working a traffic detail early Sunday morning along the 3000 block of East Independence Boulevard, rerouting traffic around a broken water pipe.
Just after 5:20 a.m., officers said Sipf’s car ran into the back of a police cruiser.
One officer was outside, very close to the car, and another was inside. Both of them were taken to the hospital and are expected to make a full recovery.
Police said that four people were in the suspect’s car. Two of them jumped out and ran after the collision.
Sipf was caught nearby, arrested, and charged with felony hit-and-run and resisting an officer.
Police are still looking for the other suspect. The other occupants in the car stayed put and are not facing any charges.
In terms of Sipf’s background, Channel 9 learned he has a long arrest history including numerous traffic violations. What’s interesting, Channel 9′s Glenn Counts notes, is that quite a few of those charges were dismissed due to a lack of evidence.
CMPD said that this is an ongoing investigation. Check wsoctv.com for updates.
Traffic operations like this can be some of the most dangerous that officers respond to. Two other CMPD officers were hurt just last October, when a driver hit them on I-485.
And just over three years ago, officer Mia Goodwin was killed by a truck while working a prior crash scene on I-85.
Police said the driver was speeding and did not slow down or move over despite the large police presence on the interstate. That driver was sentenced to time in prison.
