Police arrest man accused of trying to run over officers, CMPD says

CHARLOTTE — A suspect accused of trying to run over a police officer with a stolen car last month has been arrested, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

CMPD said officers were looking for a stolen car in southwest Charlotte on March 15 when the driver attempted to run over an officer while fleeing. The officer fired shots at the car, but police said not one was hit.

The driver of that car, Carneal Robinson, 34, was arrested on April 12, according to police.

CMPD said the incident happened in the 7900 block of Nations Ford Road where officers from the Steele Creek Division were looking for a car that was taken without permission.

The car was found at an extended-stay motel, police said. The VIN on the car matched that of the stolen car.

A passenger got out of the car and left the scene, police said.

When officers tried to detain Robinson, police said he tried to run over an officer, CMPD said. The officer shot their gun toward the driver, who drove away in a gray Ford Fusion.

No officer was hurt and authorities said no one was shot.

Robinson was charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and possession of a stolen vehicle.

Luis Peralta was checking out of the motel when shots were fired.

“Everything is, like blocked,” he told Channel 9. “Yellow tape all around and, like, 30 cop cars. I don’t know what happened. I started asking and they said there was a shooting involved.”
