CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer was charged for driving while impaired in east Charlotte early Friday morning, authorities said.
Police said Officer Crystal Washington was off-duty while she was driving on Robinson Church Road, when she lost control and hit a sign.
She was not hurt in the crash, according to officials.
Officers who responded to the scene suspected she was impaired and contacted a supervisor. She was then arrested for DWI.
CMPD said it will conduct a separate administrative investigation.
“It is always disheartening when I learn that one of our officers has violated the very laws that we are sworn to uphold. However, professional accountability is a priority for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, and our officers are expected to maintain this standard at all times,” Chief Johnny Jennings said.
No other details have been released at this point.
