CHARLOTTE — A 26-year-old man was charged with driving while impaired in a wreck in the 9700 block of North Tryon Street that killed two people, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.
At about 9:10 p.m. Tuesday, a 2011 Audi SUV was trying to turn left from the Terraces at University Place shopping center in University City when a Volkswagen GTi hit it on North Tryon Street.

The driver of the Audi, Luke Drawdy, 32, and passenger Restin Drawdy, 35, died at the scene, police said. They were wearing seat belts.
The driver of the Volkswagen, Thomas Nix, was taken to Atrium Health Main with minor injuries.
Nix was screened for impairment and charged with DWI and additional warrants have been obtained for two counts of felony death by motor vehicle and reckless driving.

Nix was also speeding, police said.
Toxicology results are pending.
