CMPD: Man charged after crash kills motorcyclist in south Charlotte

CHARLOTTE — Detectives have charged a man with misdemeanor death by vehicle in a deadly accident in south Charlotte on Monday morning, according to CMPD.

The crash happened around 7:45 a.m. on East Woodlawn Road, between a Kia Sedona and a Suzuki VL800 motorcycle.

Detectives said they arrived at the scene to find the damaged Kia Sedona and motorcycle, with the driver and passenger of the motorcyle in the roadway with injuries.

Both the driver and the passenger on the motorcycle were taken to Atrium CMC with serious injuries.

The driver of the motorcycle, Daniel Karl Ujaky, 73, died at 9:24 a.m. at the hospital.

The driver of the Kia, identified as Ebenezer Maltez Mendez, 23, was taken to Atrium Health Southpark as a precaution.

Police said the investigation showed that Mendez was traveling east on East Woodlawn Road and making a left turn into a parking lot, when he turned in front of Ujaky and the passenger of the motorcycle, Rebecca Ujaky, 64. The front of the motorcycle struck the right side of the Kia Sedona.

Speed and impairment are not suspected in either case.

Mendez was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and unsafe movement.

The investigation is ongoing.
