CMPD makes arrests in crime spree, including violent Boost Mobile robberies

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department charged Ismeel Chapman, 18, and Derrick Baker, 16, in connection with a violent crime spree across Charlotte in February and March.

Two area Boost Mobile stores were robbed and the perpetrators were caught on video.

Channel 9 reported that Chapman was also charged after a series of armed robberies in August.

Chapman was charged in connection with eight of the following cases, while Baker was charged in one of them:

  • Feb. 14: 6200 block of Albemarle Road. The victims said a suspect forced them into the back room of the business.
  • March 13: 6200 block of Albemarle Road. Three suspects forced one of the victims, who was standing outside of the business, back into the business at gunpoint. The suspects demanded money and phones. The suspects fled on foot and then were seen getting into a vehicle. A short time later, the car was involved in a collision in the University City Division. The suspects fled from the vehicle.
  • March 20: 4000 block of Rosehaven Drive. The victims said two armed suspects entered the business and forced them to a back office. While in the back office, both victims were assaulted.
  • March 21: 3100 block of Freedom Drive. Two armed suspects entered the business and demanded money.
  • March 25: 8700 block of Pence Road. An armed suspect entered the business and demanded money from the register.
  • March 25: 9000 block of Mallard Creek Road. An armed suspect entered the business and demanded money.
  • March 25: 500 block of Clanton Road. An armed suspect entered the business and demanded money.
  • March 25: 2700 block of the Plaza. The suspect demanded money from the business and a customer inside the business.

Chapman was arrested Wednesday and taken to police headquarters by the Targeted Response and Apprehension Unit.

Chapman was charged with eight counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon, eight counts of conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon and three counts of second-degree kidnapping.

Baker was arrested Wednesday by the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team.

He was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon and second-degree kidnapping.

The investigations are still active and ongoing.
