CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Crime is up, and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department says it is making a push to find more officers to help them turn those numbers around.

The department said they have 188 positions to fill, and they are trying to recruit officers from other departments by offering pay incentives and fast track training for experienced officers.

Officer Darrion Eichelberger left CMPD and then came back after the killing of George Floyd and the unrest that followed. He said this is the perfect time to put on the badge.

“Most would say this is the absolute worst time, but this is absolutely the best time and that’s why I came back because I wanted to see change and in order to have that change, you have to be a part of it,” Eichelberger said.

Watch the video above as Channel 9′s Mark Becker explains the impact Eichelberger and other officers have had in the Charlotte community.
