Man exchanges gunfire with state probation and parole officers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating a shooting incident involving state probation and parole officers in southwest Charlotte Monday night.

The shooting happened around 8 p.m. on Reid Avenue, not far from Clanton Road.

Police said the two officers from the North Carolina Department of Public Safety were on duty in the neighborhood when they saw two men, one with a gun, walking down the street.

When they approached the suspects in their patrol car, the two men ran and at least one of them fired a gun several times at the officers.

Officials said the officers' car was hit and at least one officer fired back with his department-issued handgun.

CMPD officers, along with a K-9 team and the department's helicopter, responded to the area to search for the suspects, but they were not found.

The officers involved were not hurt during the shooting, according to police.

North Carolina’s Department of Public Safety will conduct a "separate, but parallel" investigation with CMPD to make sure policies were followed during the incident, which is standard procedure.
