CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating after a woman was killed Friday morning in south Charlotte.

It happened just after 10 a.m. on the 300 block of Archdale Drive. CMPD officers found a victim dead from gunshot wounds lying on a sidewalk..

Channel 9 Skyzoom captured officers taking pictures and collecting evidence from the scene.

Witnesses told Channel 9′s Hunter Sáenz that two women were arguing before one shot the other.

“I saw some form of discussion, and then they calmed down, and then we heard a gunshot,” said Paula Gonzales, who was working at a food truck nearby.

Friday afternoon, CMPD identified the victim as 42-year-old Lashunda Shmicka McLendon.

“Every one of these situations is a tragedy. Whenever an incident is resolved with a firearm, tragedy ensues. That’s what happened here today,” said Major Ryan Kendall.

It happened in an area that has seen violent crime recently. Four days ago, police said a 25-year-old man was shot and killed just half a mile down the road on Archdale Drive. And back in May, police responded to the same area after two people were seriously hurt in a shooting.

Police said none of those shootings are related, but witnesses feel more needs to be done.

“I would like police and detectives to check the area more often because I see a lot of groups of people,” Gonzales told Sáenz.

CMPD said the investigation into Friday’s shooting is active and ongoing. It’s not clear if the suspected shooter is in custody yet.
