CMPD investigating homicide after man shot, killed in south Charlotte

CHARLOTTE — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police detectives are investigating a homicide in south Charlotte after a man was shot and killed on Sunday morning.

The investigation is taking place along Atkins Circle Drive. Officers responded to the shooting shortly after 4:30 a.m. and found the victim with gunshot wounds.

The victim was later identified as 29-year-old Reginald Averi Gilkesson, according to police.

Channel 9′s veteran crime reporter Glenn Counts went to the complex to speak with residents, who said they began hearing sounds of a disturbance around 4:00 a.m.

Multiple neighbors also told Counts they heard what they believed was fighting, and then at least five shots were fired.

Brooke Thomas, a resident, told Counts that she was woken up by flashing lights from CMPD patrol cars.

“So we were just sleeping, and then all of a sudden we hear screaming, and we look outside the window and we see the blue lights, and that was pretty much it,” Thomas said.

Counts also spoke with the family of the victim, who did not want to go on camera but said Gilkesson was a good kid with a job in the construction industry.

The police are still trying to find the person responsible.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
