Police make arrest in 17-year-old’s slaying near north Charlotte park

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have made an arrest in a homicide that took place last Sunday afternoon in north Charlotte.

Officers responded to the scene around 3 p.m. at the intersection of Cushman Street near Sugar Creek Community Park.

Authorities said they found 17-year-old Cory Jermaine McKinney Jr. in the front yard of a home. He had been shot.

MEDIC took him to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police said they believe the shooting happened at the intersection on Cushman Street and Ridgedale Circle. McKinney then ran to a nearby home where officers found him.

On Thursday, police said they had arrested 21-year-old Raheem Lowery and charged him with first-degree murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon and discharging a firearm in the city limits.
