CHARLOTTE — UPDATE: Prosecutors dropped the charges because of a lack of evidence.
Police have arrested a suspect more than two years after a man was found shot to death inside a northeast Charlotte apartment.
The shooting happened around 8:45 p.m. on Aug. 8, 2019 at the Somerset Apartments on Ventura Way Drive, just off Reagan Drive near the Sugar Creek Road and Interstate 85 Interchange.
When officers got to the complex, they found 23-year-old Samuel Stitt inside one of the apartments with a gunshot wound.
MEDIC responded and pronounced Stitt dead at the scene.
On Wednesday, detectives said they arrested and charged 20-year-old James McIlwaine with Stitt’s murder.
After two years of investigating, McIlwaine was identified as a suspect and warrants were issued for his arrest. He is currently in the Mecklenburg County Jail for other non-related charges and will be served with warrants for murder, attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon.
No other information has been released.
