CMPD: Speed a factor in fiery fatal motorcycle crash in east Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said speed played a role in a deadly motorcycle crash in east Charlotte Thursday evening.

Officers responded around 6 p.m. to the scene on Albemarle Road near Nathanael Greene Lane. When they arrived, they found a Kawasaki motorcycle that was on fire and a GMC pickup truck with some damage to its back.

Channel 9 crews could see the motorcycle on its side in the roadway and the pickup truck nearby.

According to CMPD, the motorcycle was speeding down Albemarle Road and as it got closer to Nathanael Greene Lane, it collided with the back of the truck, which was turning onto Albemarle Road.

The driver of the motorcycle, Devin Williams, 26, was taken to the hospital, where he died, CMPD said.

The truck driver was not hurt and stayed at the scene. Police said that driver was not impaired. Toxicology results are pending to see if impairment was a factor for Williams.

While the motorcycle was speeding at the time of the crash, police said the truck was not.
