CHARLOTTE — A man was hit and killed while crossing a busy east Charlotte road Monday night, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said.

CMPD was called around 10 p.m. Monday for a crash in the 3300 block of The Plaza near the Giant Penny Grocery store. There, they found a BMW with damage to its front grill and a man lying in the road.

MEDIC said the man, 65-year-old Sugar Ray Robinson, died from his injuries. The driver of the BMW stayed at the scene.

Investigators believe Robinson was crossing The Plaza outside of a crosswalk when he was hit by the BMW.

The driver was found to not have been impaired. The toxicology report for Robinson is pending.

CMPD is looking into whether the driver was speeding.

Police said The Plaza was closed between Herrin Avenue and E. 36th Street as the investigation continued. Drivers were asked to avoid the area.
