CHARLOTTE — Police were investigating a deadly crash Wednesday afternoon in east Charlotte that closed several lanes of Independence Boulevard.
Officers said a vehicle crashed and flipped before catching fire on Independence Boulevard near Albemarle Road just after 3 p.m.
The driver, Lerico Washington, died at the scene, police said.
According to authorities, Washington traveled across the three lanes to the right without braking. The car then went off the road, struck a fence and flipped over. It then caught fire.

The inbound lanes of Independence Boulevard were down to two lanes as officers investigated the crash.
No other details have been released.
